NatWest has reported flat quarterly profits of £1.1bn this morning as the economic outlook worsened. It is the last of Britain’s ‘big four’ banks to announce results this week: Lloyds, Barclays and HSBC all reported strong profits alongside higher bad loan charges.

I Asia falt Hong Kong-aksjene til sine laveste nivåer siden 2009. Hang Seng-indeksen falt mer enn 4 %, trukket ned av teknologiaksjer. Japanske Nikkei falt 0,9 prosent.

På valutamarkedene handles pundet 0,4 % lavere mot dollaren, til 1,1513 dollar. Euroen har falt gjennom paritet med dollaren og falt 0,16 % til 0,9946 dollar, en dag etter at den europeiske sentralbanken økte renten, men virket ganske due.

NatWest har rapportert et flatt kvartalsresultat på 1,1 milliarder pund denne morgenen ettersom de økonomiske utsiktene forverret seg. Det er den siste av Storbritannias “fire store” banker som kunngjorde resultater denne uken: Lloyds, Barclays og HSBC rapporterte alle sterke overskudd sammen med høyere dårlige lånekostnader.

Resultatet før skatt for de tre månedene frem til september var litt mindre enn prognosen på 1,2 milliarder pund fra analytikere, og uendret fra i fjor.

Banken tjente på stigende renter som presset inntektene opp, men satte av 247 millioner pund ekstra for å dekke dårlig gjeld i lys av de forverrede økonomiske utsiktene.

Men BOJ reviderte sine prisprognoser høyere gjennom 2024 og advarte om at inflasjonspresset utvidet seg. Det sto:

Amazon-aksjene falt nærmere 20 % i etter-handel etter at selskapet sa at den viktige julehandelsesongen ville bli mindre enn forventet. Det ga et overskudd på 2,9 milliarder dollar etter to kvartaler med tap. Men det var Amazons veiledning om feriekvartalet som bekymret investorene.
